Succession to the Throne and Divine Right in Russia under Peter the Great

In our days the issue of succession to the throne does not have much relevance in most of? Europe, as the 20th century witnessed the decline of the institution of monarchy. In the Early Modern Age, however, monarchy was the most common form of government, and succession to the throne, by and large, was determined by the ideas on the nature of political power. Russia was a peculiar country both with regard to succession and the conception of rulership. From the early 17th century on false tsars made their appearance from time to time, and the authority of the tsar was much more than that which is called the divine right of kings. What were, then, the main tenets of tsarist ideology of power in the 16th -17th centuries, and what kind of changes were introduced under the reign of Peter the Great, the ?reformer tsar?, in? the fields of succession to the throne and the perception of power? How were these changes communicated towards his subjects? These issues stand in the focus of the author?s recent book.
Endre Sashalmi (born in 1964) is Professor of History at the University of P?cs, Department of Medieval and Early Modern History, whose main field of research is early modern state-building and political thought, with a special emphasis on Russia. He has published several studies and articles in Hungary and abroad too. His previous two books, The Outline of West-European State-Building 1000-1800 (2006) and State, Power, Ideology: Studies on the Peculiarities of Russian History (2007), this latter one written in co-authorship with M?rta Font, deal with these issues.
